Two people are dead and three others were transported to hospital after an apartment fire in Caledonia.

Ontario Provincial Police say emergency services responded to a fire in a 30-unit apartment building on Saturday morning at approximately 3:30 a.m.

They say the fire was contained to a single apartment and was quickly brought under control by firefighters.

Two residents were pronounced dead inside the apartment, while three other residents were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

Police say the rest of the residents in the building were transported to a nearby shelter.

The apartment building suffered extensive damage, estimated to be at approximately $250,000.

The Office of the Fire Marshal will be investigating the cause of the fire.

Caledonia is located just southwest of Hamilton.
