Commuters were coping with a messy drive north of Toronto after a major crash closed all southbound lanes of Highway 400 south of Barrie early Friday morning.

Ontario Provincial Police say a tractor trailer lost control on weather-slicked roads, slamming into the guardrail and jack-knifing across the highway just before 5 a.m.

The crash ruptured the truck's fuel tanks, spewing fuel across the scene. No injuries were reported in the crash.

Only one southbound lane was open for much of the morning rush hour between Hwy. 88 and Hwy. 89 while crews removed the wreckage and soaked up diesel leaking from the truck.

In a statement, police said motorists are reminded to slow down and drive according to winter weather conditions.
