Many Toronto residents had already heard they'd soon be paying to get rid of their garbage, but it now looks like some will be paying more than initially expected.

An upcoming report to the city budget committee proposes that households dumping the heaviest loads pay up to $190 a year for their bins -- compared to the $151 initially suggested -- while those that can reduce, reuse and recycle their way to the smallest size bin will get a small refund of $10.

The price tag hike on the larger bins is intended to finance the $10 refund, which rewards for small-bin users for keeping waste to a minimum. Following the same reduction-minded logic, the price of the medium-sized bins was reduced from $41 to $39.

The smallest bins hold about one regular size garbage bag. The next size up holds about 1.5 bags and will cost $55, while the second largest size goes for $133 annually and holds about three bags.

The project is expected to bring in about $54 million annually.

The budget committee will discuss the recommendations at a meeting next week. If approved by council, the system will be enacted in the summer for high-density dwellings and in November for single family homes.
