A few dozen members of Toronto's Congolese community marched in protest of their homeland's government Saturday, demanding an end to violent conflicts and political instability.

The group marched peacefully from Queen's Park along University Avenue before rallying in front of the U.S. Consulate.

Demonstrators said they are upset over a number of issues, including last year's presidential and parliamentary elections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, marred by violence and allegations of vote tampering.

The protesters are also accusing the Congolese government of violating its citizens' basic rights and allowing foreign mining companies to exploit workers and the country's natural resources.

A number of police officers closely followed the march, which occasionally blocked traffic on downtown streets. Police said they were initially expecting a crowd of about 300 people.
