An 80-year-old man has died after contracting the West Nile Virus, according to Toronto Public Health.

A spokeswoman told CP24 the man died in the past two weeks but the cause of death was not immediately confirmed.

It’s the city’s second confirmed case of the virus, but is the first death this year.

In 2012, the city saw 94 reported cases of West Nile virus and one death.

The West Nile virus is typically transmitted to people through the bite of an infected mosquito.

The risk of becoming infected is low, however, fewer than one per cent of people infected become ill enough to be hospitalized.

Symptoms of the illness include fever, neck stiffness, extreme confusion, muscle weakness, headaches and vomiting.
