Toronto-area hospitals welcome first babies of 2025
One of the first babies born in 2025 was delivered just four seconds after midnight at Mississauga Hospital.
“We were planning for a due date of December 31, but he decided to wait until 2025 for his birthday,” mother Samreen said of her son, Huzaifa, in a news release issued Wednesday morning.
Trillium Health Partners, which oversees operations at the hospital, said both Samreen and baby are healthy and well as they posed for a picture with Mahmood, Huzaifa’s father.
Huzaifa is one of just a few New Year’s Day newborns in Ontario.
In Toronto, baby Harper was born just five minutes after the New Year’s Eve countdown ended, to parents Chris and Machaela O’Heir. Harper weighs seven pounds and 14 ounces.
Southlake Health in Newmarket, Ont. announced Jamie-Lynne was born just under an hour later at 12:55 a.m. They said the baby was the first to be born in a York Region hospital in 2025 and that her mother, Sarah, is doing well.
North of the city, in Barrie, Jenelle Lyman said she hoped for a Jan. 1 baby, and the first-time parent got her wish shortly after midnight.
“I tried really hard. I didn’t want a December 31 baby,” she said after delivering her son, Scottie, alongside partner Quinn Steele at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre.
The five-pound bundle of joy arrived at 1:17 a.m.
Navethra Goviandarasu and Rathnagiri Athiannan welcomed their baby girl at 1:56 a.m. at Oshawa Hospital, Lakeridge Health said in a news release, noting that the baby is the first to be born in Durham Region this year. The parents have not yet decided on their daughter’s name, they said.
At 2:45 a.m., parents Taranpreet and Vijayvir met their baby, Anhad, for the first time at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital. In a new release, the hospital’s operator, Mackenzie Health said the newborn weighs six pounds and two ounces.
Lennox was born at 3:33 a.m., Oak Valley Health said in a news release. The 6.7-pound baby was delivered at Markham Stouffville Hospital and the health-care network said Lennox’s parents are “overjoyed.”
Hours later, at 6:01 a.m., Awa Sinyan and Amadou Sanneh said hello to their baby girl in Brampton. The newborn weighed in at seven-pounds and 3.5-ounces and is the younger sibling of Amira and Yayya.
