Three construction workers suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries Wednesday after an underground explosion in Pickering.

The men were working on a waste pipeline project and boring through the ground when they hit a “pocket” of methane gas and a small explosion occurred, Durham Regional Police said.

The incident occurred about 40 metres below the ground on York Durham Line, south of Highway 407.

Three workers were sent to hospital as a result. A fourth man was also injured, but not seriously.

Police said there is “limited damage” to the underground tunnel.

The Ministry of Labour is investigating.
