Provincial police say a recent call about an alleged liquor store fraud turned into a high-speed police chase along Highway 401.

The OPP say they were alerted about a "suspect vehicle involved in an incident" that was leaving the Belleville, Ont., area on Tuesday afternoon along the westbound Highway 401.

As police began to pursue the vehicle, it pulled into the passing lane and started driving at speeds exceeding 160 kilometres per hour.

Drivers were forced onto the shoulder as the vehicle flew down the 401.

Police later put a spike belt across the road, but the vehicle managed to avoid it. The OPP say that one officer had to jump out of the way as the car passed by.

The vehicle was eventually stopped near the Port Hope exit, about an hour's drive from Belleville. Three people were inside the car and they all were arrested.

The driver is a 26-year-old man from Mississauga, Ont. He faces several charges, including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, assault with a weapon and racing a motor vehicle.

Tahla Israr was released on a promise to appear and is due to appear in court on Feb. 2.
