Residents in the area of Bloor Street and Lansdowne Avenue were asked to stay indoors and keep their windows closed for several hours Thursday due to a reported sulphuric acid "mist" in the air.

Toronto Fire Services told CP24 that chemicals, including sulphuric acid, were reportedly mixed together at a building on Wade Avenue and the combination caused a type of mist to fill the air.

The mist, Fire Capt. Michael Westwood said, can cause irritation to the nose, eyes and throat.

The building where the incident occurred was evacuated and a hazmat team responded to the scene.

Streets in the area were blocked off for several hours and residents were asked to stay indoors. The area was deemed safe by Toronto Fire Services shortly after 2 p.m.

No injuries have been reported.

A TTC bus was also called in to shelter approximately 40 people.

Westwood said a company is coming to remove the substance from the scene.
