An 84-year-old city woman is clinging to life after being struck by a TTC streetcar on Gerrard Street east of Broadview Avenue.

Paramedics rushed her to St. Michael's hospital on Friday morning for treatment of her life-threatening head injuries.

The accident occurred at a crosswalk. The senior was attempting to cross Gerrard Street at DeGrassi Street at about 9:15 a.m.

"At this point in time, we do have some conflicting statements as to the exact cause and the direction of travel of the pedestrian," Sgt. Tim Burrows of the Toronto Police Service's traffic services unit told reporters.

The woman lives in the area and was on the roadway when the streetcar struck her, he said.

Although police have the woman's name, they haven't been able to locate relatives.

Police have interviewed several drivers. Burrows said he briefly spoke with the streetcar operator, who he described as shaken.

"We understand there was a couple of cars that were passing the streetcar on the right-hand side. And those drivers, we would love the opportunity to talk to them, see if they saw anything," he said, adding it could be critical to the investigation.

The accident tied up streetcar traffic along Gerrard Street for hours as police investigated the accident.
