A day after the province launched its new LCBO bottle recycling program, it appears some homeowners are slow to adjust to the initiative.

City Works employees who went out collecting recycling boxes on Tuesday were still finding large amounts of wine and liquor bottles inside blue bins.

"It's still costing them," said worker Tony Benacquista. "I guess 20 cents to them is nothing."

Under the new "Bag it Back" program, consumers are charged up to 20 cents per wine or spirit bottle at the LCBO, but the money is refunded when the empties are returned to Beer Stores.

Some residents laud the long-awaited idea, but others don't feel it's worth the drive to Beer Stores, which are equipped to handle the returns.

"I'm not sure, 20 cents a week is going to matter, when you really think about it," said Christine.

People like Carl, though, have already changed their recycling habits.

"It's a marvelous idea," he said. "It's good for the environment, it's good for everybody."

The government says the plan will divert 80 million bottles away from landfills.

The deposit system for beer bottles has been very successful, as 98 per cent are brought back.
