The province is investigating a car crash that sent a nine-year-old girl to hospital and involved the Toronto police.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit, an impartial government body that probes incidents where a civilian is seriously injured in the presence of police, said the accident happened at around 2 a.m. on Friday.

Police were investigating a report of an assault when they located a vehicle they believed was connected to the incident. They attempted to stop the minivan but the vehicle continued towards Albion Road and Highway 27.

At that point, the minivan collided with another car carrying a 47-year-old man and his nine-year-old daughter.

The car errupted into flames as emergency crews were attempting to free the man and his daughter. The fire was quickly extinguished and everyone escaped safely.

The little girl was rushed to the Hospital for Sick Children where she underwent surgery for a serious leg fracture. Her father was taken to the William Osler Health Centre where he was treated and released.

A third car was also involved in the crash, according to the SIU, but no one in that vehicle was injured.

Toronto police did not release any details about the case because of the SIU's involvement.
