Toronto police say Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the death of man in the city’s Eglinton West neighbourhood.
Police responded to calls about a man wielding a hammer at an apartment building on Gilbert Avenue, near the intersection of Eglinton West Avenue and Caledonia Road just after midnight.
An officer fired his gun after an interaction between police and the man, the SIU said in a statement.
Paramedics responded and said the man, 45, was pronounced dead on the scene.
The SIU has identifed the man as 45-year-old Andrew Loku from Toronto.
The SIU arrived on the scene at approximately 1:40 a.m. on Sunday.
The details of the incident are not immediately clear.
The SIU is a provincial agency that investigates death, serious injuries or other allegations in which police are involved.
