A man who sped away from a police R.I.D.E check in Mississuaga and then crashed into a pole a short time later has been pronounced dead, Ontario Provincial Police confirm.
Officers were conducting a R.I.D.E spot check on the ramp from the QEW westbound lanes to Hurontario Street at around 6:25 a.m.when the vehicle failed to stop
A police pursuit was initiated but was soon halted due to the risk to public safety
The vehicle then crashed into a pole near Dundas and Hurontario streets at around 6:30 a.m.
According to an EMS official, the car split in half as a result of the impact.
The victim was rushed to hospital, but was pronounced dead a short time later.
The Special Investigations Unit is investigating.
The SIU is mandated to investigate whenever a civilian is seriously injured or killed while in the presence of police.
