Toronto police are looking for a suspect they believe is involved in 40 nighttime break-ins into east-end homes.

A police sweep of the neighbourhood at Victoria Park Avenue and Queen Street on Monday morning did not lead to an arrest.

However, the search of sheds, garages and backyards turned up what investigators believe is a pair of shoes that belongs to the thief.

The tread pattern on the shoes is similar to a pattern found at the scene of break-and-enters that occurred a week ago in a neighbourhood to the east, one detective on the scene told reporters.

Police describe the suspect as a white male, about six feet tall and 170 pounds, with dark hair and a slim build.

Investigators believe the suspect targets homes with unlocked doors or windows.

He has taken items ranging from laptop computers to cameras, as well as cash.

Police are warning residents to lock all doors and windows, secure outdoor items that could help the thief gain access to the home and ensure that all outdoor lights are working.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 416-808-5500 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS.
