TORONTO, Ontario -- Toronto police have released images of three people they are seeking in connection with the fatal shooting of a man at a west-end community centre.
The one female and two male suspects captured on surveillance cameras were either "directly or indirectly" involved in Neeko Mitchell's murder, Det. Sgt. Brian Borg said Wednesday.
Investigators are not releasing many details about the shooting but they are asking anyone who can identify any of the three suspects to come forward.
Mitchell, 25, was shot multiple times in front of the North Kipling Community Centre (in the area of Kipling Avenue and Finch Avenue) on Nov. 24, in what police say was a targeted shooting.
When officers arrived at the scene, Borg said, they found a number of people around Mitchell, some of them trying to help the dying man. But Mitchell had been shot several times and "never had any chance of survival," Borg said.
Mitchell was at the city-run community centre to watch a basketball tournament, Borg said, adding that a member of Mitchell's immediate family was playing in the event. The victim was shot and killed just a few minutes after arriving.
While police appealed to witnesses to come forward after the shooting, Borg said very few have done so. Investigators have been helped by a number of closed-circuit TV cameras that were installed by the city after a previous homicide at the same centre, but Borg said witnesses are still needed.
Anyone considering whether to contact police should think about all the people who were in the vicinity when the shots were fire, he added.
"Neeko Mitchell was shot numerous times with a high-velocity ammunition, none of which remained in his body," said Borg.
"Considering that there were a number of people standing in the immediate area of the shooting, we are very fortunate that no one else was shot," he said, adding that the video shows a man and a toddler just steps away.
