Police say a female suspect has been arrested after they got a call about a professor stabbed by a student at the University of Toronto.

Const. Victor Kwong says officers received a report around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday that a professor had been attacked with a knife by a student on the school's downtown campus (at 22 Russell Street).

He says police were told the professor was stabbed in the arm and leg.

Paramedics say a man in his 40s was stabilized at the scene before being taken to hospital with a minor laceration.

Kwong says a suspect was "held down by several people in the office" before being arrested by police.

He says the weapon has been recovered but that more information wasn't available.

A university spokeswoman says only that the school is supporting the police investigation and will co-operate as needed.

The incident comes days into the first week of the UofT's school year.
