Toronto police have identified the victim of a downtown shooting that happened early Saturday morning.
Police said they received a call about multiple gunshots around Yonge and Charles Streets shortly before 2:30 a.m. on Saturday.
As officers arrived at the scene of the shooting, a car crashed into a nearby building.
In a statement released Sunday, police said the 25-year-old driver, identified as Charles Shillingford, was found with “obvious trauma” cause by a gunshot wound to the chest.
Officers say they believe somebody shot at Shillingford’s car while he was travelling down the road after leaving a nearby nightclub.
Shillingford fled the scene in his car, heading west on Charles Street and then south on Yonge Street, investigators say. He made it as far as College Street where he crashed his car into the side of a condo building.
Shillingford was transported to St. Michael's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
At a press conference on Saturday afternoon, Det. Sgt. Hank Idsinga said police are now trying to identify suspects and piece together what led to the shooting.
He also said that police believe there was only one gunman, and that the suspect and associates were captured on surveillance video in the area.
Idsinga said officers think the shooting was targeted, but not gang-related. He also said the victim was previously known to police.
A gun was recovered from the scene, but police did not say if the weapon belonged to the suspect or to the victim.
