Toronto Police have issued a Canada-wide warrant for the arrest of Mohamud Abdiwali Dirie, who police allege was responsible for the shooting death of a 27-year-old man outside a downtown hotel on Aug. 9.
Dirie, 25, has been charged with first-degree murder of Kabil Abdulkhadir, who was with friends when he was shot and killed in front of the Marriott Hotel at 525 Bay St., just steps away from the Eaton Centre and Toronto City Hall.
Abdulkhadir was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident was the result of a “pre-existing dispute” between Dirie and Abdulkhadir, Det. Joyce Schertzer said at a press conference on Friday.
A second man is wanted for various firearms offences after allegedly shooting at the murder suspect’s getaway car, a rented blue Hyundai Elantra, Schertzer told reporters.
A third man, Abdullahi Alifarah, 20, was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to murder.
Police are hoping the witnesses who were with Abdulkhadir at the time of the shooting will come forward, Schertzer said.
Schertzer said investigators reviewed a large amount of security camera footage to assist in the investigation, but that the details of the shooting remain unclear.
“This remains a very active investigation and is very fluid,” she said.
The accused’s brother, Mohamed Abdiwal Dirie, was one of two men shot and killed June 29 in a condominium suite near Queen Street West and Dovercourt Road.
Police do not believe Abdulkhadir’s murder was in retaliation for the suspect’s brother’s death.
Investigators say Dirie should be considered armed and dangerous.
Anyone with information on Dirie’s whereabouts is being asked to contact police at 416-808-5200 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
