After being struck by at least two vehicles, a now-dead Richmond Hill man was also hit by a York Regional Police cruiser as he lay on a roadway early Thursday morning.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene but the precise time of his death remains unclear, Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit said in a statement.

Police received a call at about 3:30 a.m. from a driver who indicated they struck a pedestrian with their car while travelling on Yonge Street, north of Stouffville Road.

Responding officers, however, believe more than one civilian vehicle hit the man.

“The man appeared to have been struck by at least one other vehicle, possibly two or more,” SIU investigator Jon Ansell told reporters on Thursday.

York Regional Police said they discovered vehicle parts at the scene.

Investigators are searching for a silver Mercedes R-Class SUV, model between 2006 and 2007, in connection with the incident.

Police say the vehicle will likely have damage to its front, possibly to the headlights.

Three forensic investigators from the SIU are working with York Regional Police on the case.

The SIU is an arms-length agency that is summoned to investigate whenever police are involved in incidents where death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault have taken place.

Anyone with information about the case has been encouraged to contact the Special Investigations Unit at 416-622-2290 or 1-800-787-8529 ext. 2290.
