A 30-year-old woman is the city's latest pedestrian fatality, and Toronto police are looking for the driver of a vehicle that fled the scene.

The incident happened early Tuesday evening near the intersection of Steeles Avenue East and Silver Star Boulevard just after 5:30 p.m.

A Ford minivan struck the married mother of one as she crossed the road. The 75-year-old driver stopped, but then someone driving a silver Toyota Corolla ran over the victim and kept going eastbound on Steeles.

Two sisters who stopped after coming upon the scene told reporters on Wednesday that they tried to comfort Jian Shi, who lay dying.

"We couldn't do anything for her. We couldn't move her," said Susan Wong, who had returned to place flowers. "We just put a cloth on her to help her keep warm. Another lady had another cloth, so she just put it on her head."

Sarah Wong told reporters: "The second driver had to make an effort to continue to drive ... I don't know how anyone could live with themselves."

Shi, who emigrated from China, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police said she died from her injuries on Wednesday morning.

Her husband and parents in China have been contact. Shi lived with her younger sister, who was too distraught to talk. Fang Lin, a family friend, said that Shi had hoped to bring her husband and five-year-old son to Canada.

Police are now looking for the second vehicle that fled the scene. They advise the vehicle will likely show signs of damage.

Investigators will be asking local businesses for any security camera footage that could help identify the vehicle.

The collision remains under investigation and no charges have been laid so far.

Police are appealing for the driver of the Corolla to contact a lawyer and surrender to them.
