York Regional Police are expected to release new details Tuesday about a man whose body was found nearly 30 years ago in Markham, Ont.

Investigators have been unable to identify the victim despite thorough testing on his remains, which were found on the side of the road on the Eleventh Concession, north of Steeles Ave one evening in July, 1980.

Police publicly unveiled a clay bust Tuesday morning that was created by using details from the DNA that was gleaned from the victim's remains.

Douglas Clarke, a homicide detective with York Regional Police, told CTV's Canada AM that the man's body was exhumed to see if the latest technology could unveil new information.

"We thought if we could exhume the body, we knew that there was teeth, maybe we can get some DNA," he said.

Investigators were not able to match his DNA but were able to put together a detailed description of how the victim may have looked.

The man was between 5'5" and 5'6" with a small frame, brown hair that was about four inches long, and a gaunt face.

Clarke, who took over the cold case two years ago, said that investigators are hoping the bust looks like the dead man.

"We hope it looks pretty close to this and that someone comes forward," he said.

At first police thought the man was in a car accident or had died when he went out into the bush but Clarke said investigators now believe the victim met his demise through foul play.

He said the body was probably on the ground for two years before someone found the remains in 1980.

A set of women's clothing was also found laying beside the victim's remains. Forensic testing showed the clothes were not on the man when he died.

Nonetheless, police believe he wore the woman's clothing at one time - a blouse with jeans, frilly white socks and red and pink high heels.

Clarke said he hopes this new information will give police new leads in the case.

"We will follow up all leads and hopefully we can get to the identity of this person and that will allow us to reinvestigate from the other end," he said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the homicide unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7864, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
