Peel Regional Police homicide detectives have charged a man with manslaughter in a hit-and-run they say is now a murder investigation.

Mohammad Al-Kassem, 25, of Mississauga appeared in court Thursday afternoon.

Police say victim Ronald Persaud, 28, was hit by a car around 5 p.m. Wednesday night in the Burnhamthorpe Road East and Hurtontario Street area in Mississauga.

Persaud was taken to hospital but died from his injuries.

Police say Persaud and a suspect got into an altercation somewhere near 225 Webb Drive, in Mississauga.

They allege that shortly after the squabble, Persaud was run-down by someone in a vehicle.

Police say the driver fled the scene of the collision.
