An Oshawa woman is dead after being struck by a vehicle while out for a walk early Thursday morning.

Durham Regional Police said the woman, a 59-year-old Oshawa resident, was struck on Hillcroft Street near Camelot Drive at about 7:15 a.m.

Emergency crews rushed her to hospital but she died shortly after the collision.

The driver involved in the incident remained at the scene to speak with officers.

Durham police said the intersection is expected to remain closed for several hours as officers investigate the collision.

This is the sixth traffic collision involving a pedestrian, and second fatality, in Durham Region since Dec. 15.

Reports that the woman was out walking dogs when she was struck have not been confirmed, Sgt. Nancy van Rooy said.
