A Port Credit OPP officer is facing criminal charges related to the alleged use of false evidence to lay street racing and speeding charges against motorists on three separate occasions this month.

According to an OPP news release issued Friday, a criminal investigation found that "the officer charged drivers in three incidents in May 2009 under the Highway Traffic Act for speeding and Section 172 legislation (racing/stunt driving) based on false evidence."

Sgt. Dennis Mahoney-Bruer, 49, has been charged with three counts of breach of trust and one count of attempting to obstruct justice.

The 12-year veteran officer is scheduled to appear in a Brampton court on July 13.

OPP spokesperson Insp. Dave Ross told ctvtoronto.ca that investigation into suspicious charges came together quickly.

"We acted immediately when we received the information and we ended up charging the member," Ross said in a brief telephone interview on Friday afternoon.

The charges that Mahoney-Bruer laid against the three motorists are in the process of being withdrawn, Ross said.

Ross said investigators are currently working with the Crown to review files the officer worked on as an investigator.

"We haven't yet quite finalized what that review will look like, what the scope will be, how far back it will go," Ross said.

Anyone with information for investigators is asked to call the OPP Professional Standards Bureau at 705-329-6051.

Anyone with concerns about charges laid by this officer, outstanding or otherwise, is asked to contact Staff Sgt. Jack Hanjan at 905-278-6131.
