A fiery crash along Toronto's Don Valley Expressway claimed the life of a driver on Thursday, after a speeding car crashed into a guardrail and burst into flames.

Southbound lanes along the major downtown thoroughfare were closed at the Bayview exit in the aftermath of the grisly accident which happened at about 11:20 a.m. just north of Gerrard Street East.

The lanes reopened at about 5 p.m. The Northbound lanes, which were also closed to traffic, reopened earlier in the afternoon.

Toronto police have not released the name or age of the man involved in the fatal crash, but said he was the only person in the vehicle at the time.

It is believed the car rubbed its tire up against the guardrail before slamming into a concrete support beam and spinning into the air. Police say speeding may have played a role in the crash.

The driver of the vehicle was inside the car when Emergency Services arrived and was pronounced dead at the scene, Toronto Police said.

Canada AM weather anchor Jeff Hutcheson was driving along the DVP at the time of the accident and said he missed the collision by "mere milliseconds."

He said the sport utility vehicle struck at least one other vehicle before hitting the guardrail and flipping into the air.

Hutcheson added that the car appeared to have been speeding and was already on fire by time it became airborne.
