An executive has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and other charges in connection with Thursday morning’s stabbing of a man at a Rosedale apartment building.

Ellis Kirkland, 60, was arrested Thursday afternoon after being found “in crisis” on the edge of a high rise hotel balcony in the Charles and Church Streets area.

After a number of hours of negotiation, police rescued the woman from the balcony and took her into custody.

Toronto police issued a statement Friday morning thanking the public and the media for their assistance locating Kirkland. They said she now faces four charges: attempted murder; aggravated assault; assault with a weapon; possessions of weapons dangerous to the public peace.

She appeared briefly at the College Park courthouse on Friday, and will return to court at Old City Hall on Monday morning.

Police began their search for Kirkland early Thursday in connection with a morning stabbing at an apartment building near Rosedale Valley Road and Park Road.

Police said they had been called to the building at approximately 7:30 a.m., where they found a 67-year-old man suffering from stab wounds.

Investigators said it appeared that the man had been stabbed several times in the torso with a large kitchen knife. He was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition, though his condition has since been upgraded, and his injuries are no longer considered critical.

Police announced shortly after the stabbing that they were searching for Kirkland, and that she could be dangerous and armed with a knife. They warned the public not to approach her.

According to an online biography, Kirkland is an "internationally-recognized Harvard award-winning" resource infrastructure specialist.

She is the chair and founder of NATO Paxbuild Economic Platform, a project of the NATO Association of Canada that is “designed to encourage peace and security through economic stability.”
