ST. CATHARINES - The McGuinty government says a new generation of super-secure driver's licences for US citizens will help its push for passport alternatives.

Under new US security measures Canadians will have to show passports at all border crossings as early as next summer.

Last spring, Dalton McGuinty and several other premiers travelled to Washington to shore up support for high-tech driver's licences as an alternative for passports.

And in recent months the US Homeland Security has struck agreements on federally approved secure licences with four states -- New York, Arizona, Vermont and Washington.

Tourism Minister Jim Bradley says it's exactly what the Ontario government has been advocating for more than two years.
