The province's Special Investigations Unit is on the scene Monday afternoon after a man was struck by police gunfire in the city's downtown core.

The incident happened at about 1:30 p.m. at Victoria and Shuter streets, near Yonge Street.

Toronto police confirmed a 24-year-old man was hit twice by gunfire.

Emergency crews were on the scene shortly after to transport the man to a nearby hospital.

The man is in serious condition at St. Michael's Hospital.

The circumstances leading up to the incident are not yet known.

The SIU is at the intersection interviewing witnesses. Shuter Street is closed from Yonge Street to Victoria Street for the investigation.
