There has been a tragic start to the weekend near Wasaga Beach after a man drowned in the Nottawasaga River on Saturday.

Witnesses said the 31-year-old drowning victim waded into the river to get a ball which had fallen into the water, despite having limited swimming abilities.

A 14-year-old boy spotted the man in trouble and quickly called for help. Emergency crews rushed to the scene and pulled the man from the bottom of the river.

However, it was too late. The man was rushed to the hospital with no vital signs and was pronounced dead Saturday afternoon.

The death marks the fourth drowning in the Georgian Bay area this summer season.
