A 44-year-old man is dead after he went into medical distress while South Simcoe Police Service officers were investigating a domestic call at an Innisfil home Saturday night.

Ontario's special investigations unit is handling the investigation into Suler Saamel's death because the incident involved police.

In a news release issued early Sunday evening, the SIU said five SSPS officers went to a home on Innisville Beach Road, just south of Barrie, some time before 10:10 p.m.

When the officers arrived at the house, Saamel locked himself in a room and refused to come out, the news release stated.

The officers eventually forced their way into the room, where they found Saamel in medical distress, the SIU said.

Paramedics transported the man to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.

An autopsy is scheduled to take place in Toronto on Monday to determine the cause of death.

Of the five SSPS officers who were present, two have been designated as subject officers and three as witness officers, the SIU said.

Police tape still surrounded the property Sunday afternoon, while police cruisers were parked outside to guard the scene.

Neighbours told CTV News the house, situated on a quiet country road, is occupied by a man and a woman.
