Peel police have identified the victim of an early morning shooting in Mississauga as 23-year-old Mario Barnes.

Police were called to a home on Lancaster Avenue near Morning Star Drive around 4:30 a.m. after a friend of Barnes’ phoned police.

Paramedics said he suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Yellow police tape could be seen cordoning off the home Saturday morning and a number of police cruisers could be seen parked there as well.

Neighbours near the house told CP24 a family lives in the home. Officers at the scene said Barnes was a tenant who rented the basement from a family who lives upstairs.

“We have to try and track his movements from before to see if there was anything that could have precipitated the shooting,” Const. Fiona Thivierge told CP24 at the scene.

Thivierge said Barnes was known to police, but wouldn’t elaborate.

Both the family who own the home and a number of males who were with Barnes are being questioned by police. Officers also went canvassing door-to-door in the area to see if neighbours had any information.

Police say there are currently no suspects and no weapons have been recovered in connection with the shooting.

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the homicide bureau at (905) 453-2121, ext. 3205 or call Peel Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
