RICHMOND HILL, Ont. -- A man has been charged with first-degree murder after a woman died from injuries sustained in what police are calling a suspicious house fire in Richmond Hill.

Police say officers could hear cries for help coming from the burning home on the afternoon of Oct. 6 and found a 42-year-old man and a 75-year-old woman inside.

Both were taken to hospital with serious injuries, but the woman died in hospital a month later.

Police say they discovered another woman, who they identified as the man's wife, had gone to another hospital with fire-related injuries.

They say the man's wife and their five children escaped the flames before police arrived at the scene.

Along with the murder charge, he faces six counts of attempted murder, one of arson with disregard for human life, one of uttering threats and two of breaching probation.

His name is not being released to protect the victims' identities.
