The day after a two-year-old boy drowned in a backyard pond, the man who owned the home, and the pond, appeared in court.

Sriranganathan Ampalam, 58, is facing a charge of criminal negligence causing death.

He appeared in court Wednesday, where he was released on $15,000 bail.

As conditions of his bail, Ampalam must remain in the province, must surrender all travel documents and must notify officers if he's changing his address.

Police said they responded to an emergency call Tuesday in Scarborough, with reports that a toddler had fallen into a backyard pond on Carrying Place.

Paramedics performed CPR on the child, who was not breathing when they arrived.

The boy was taken to a local hospital and then transferred to Sick Kids hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 2:30 p.m.

Neighbours told CTV Toronto's Austin Delaney that the family launched a frantic search after the child went missing and eventually found him lying in a small pond behind the house next door.

That yard had no gate, neighbours said, and the charges are due to this lack of fencing.

Ampalam's next court appearance is on August 2.
