TORONTO -- Toronto police say a man charged in the death of a woman who was stabbed and set on fire was out on bail on domestic violence-related charges at the time of her killing.

Det. Sgt. Brian Borg says the body of the 27-year-old female victim -- whose identity has yet to be confirmed -- was unrecognizable when it was found Saturday.

Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah, 30, is charged with first-degree murder. Borg says the man was known to police.

Borg says Owusu-Ansah was charged Dec. 5 with three counts of assault, two counts each of assault with a weapon and weapons dangerous to the public peace and one count of threatening death.

He says the charges were all related to domestic violence and involved the same victim.

Borg says the woman's next-of-kin have been notified and her name may be released later today.
