TORONTO - The Crown in the corruption trial of five former Toronto drug squad officers has started laying out its case as the long-delayed trial finally gets underway.

The case goes back more than a decade, when an investigation began into the conduct of members of the Toronto police drug squad.

Charges were first laid in 2004, but delays have slowed the case's progress through the courts.

The charges are based on a slew of allegations, from conducting searches without warrants to falsifying notes and perjury.

The Crown also says the accused engaged in "unjustified acts of physical violence" against those in their custody, stealing from them and then lying to try to cover their tracks.

All but one of the accused have since left the force.
