'I still haven't slept:' Oshawa mom finds bullet hole in daughter’s dresser after 14 shots fired at housing complex

An Oshawa mom discovered bullet holes in her daughter’s dresser and in the ceiling of her living room early Wednesday morning after police say more than a dozen shots were “indiscriminately” fired at a housing complex overnight.

Police said the shots rang out at a housing complex in the area of Mary Street North and Taunton Road at around 2:05 a.m.

According to Durham Regional Police Chief Peter Moreira, 14 shots were fired but no injuries were reported.

Moreira said it is “very lucky” that no one was hurt.

“Families were home sleeping while one or more coward(s) fired indiscriminately,” Moreira wrote in a statement on social media.

Gabby Boileau told CTV News Toronto that she was scrolling through her phone with her headphones on when the shots were fired.

“I heard a bunch of popping and I’ve never heard gunshots before so I thought it was a car backfiring,” she said.

“Next thing you know, I’m seeing red and blue lights outside.”

She said officers saw her through the window and decided to come ask her questions about what had occurred.

“It was then that I realized that there is in fact a bullet in the ceiling of my living room… and a bullet in my daughter’s bedroom under her bed,” Boileau said.

Boileau said her 12-year-old daughter was staying at her father’s house on Tuesday night.

“Thank god she was not here,” she said.

The bullet hole penetrated the wall under her daughter’s loft bed and struck a dresser in the room.

“I just keep thinking about had been my daughter been home and her bed been a normal sized bed and not a loft bed, she would most likely not be with us today,” Boileau said.

“I still haven’t really slept. I’ve had police in my house all night long… I haven’t processed what has happened yet.”

Speaking to CP24 Wednesday, Durham police Constable Nicholas Gluckstein said the situation is alarming.

"If I was a parent, safe inside my home, this is the last thing I would expect to happen," he said.

"To date, we've taken 96 guns off the road. That means 96 guns that are no longer in the hands of criminals that can be used to perpetrate crimes like the one [we saw today]."

Police said they are working to identify those responsible and are urging anyone with video footage of the area at the time of the shooting to contact investigators.

“The frequency of these incidents is of great concern and require dedicated resources to address,” Moreira’s statement read. “It’s another sober reminder that @RegionofDurham is not immune from gun related crime.”

Shots fired at Brampton home in unrelated incident

The shooting in Oshawa came just 30 minutes before an unrelated shooting at a home in Brampton.

In a security video obtained by CTV News Toronto, two suspects are seen approaching a home on Senwood Street, near McLaughlin Road and Wanless Drive, at around 2:30 a.m. One suspect is seen firing shots at a home on the street before the two flee the area seconds later.

Police confirmed that multiple shots were fired at the home.

“Fortunately no one was injured,” Peel Regional Police said in an email to CP24. “The home was occupied at the time.”

The 22 Criminal Investigations Bureau is leading the probe and officers are conducting a canvass of the area for security video. Some video has already been obtained by investigators, police said.

They said it would appear “multiple” suspects are involved but were unable to confirm how many people they believe are responsible for the incident.

Investigators noted that it is a “targeted style shooting” but added that it is not yet known if that particular residence was targeted.
