Although it's officially autumn, the humid heat in Toronto broke a new record on Tuesday.

The mercury reached 31C at Pearson Airport at noon, breaking the 49-year-old record of 28.3C set in 1958, the Toronto Star reported.

While the forecast for the rest of the work week calls for cooler temperatures, they are expected to remain above the normal high of 21C.

"For this to happen, when the nights are longer than the days, this is going to be quite a feat," David Phillips, senior climatologist at Environment Canada, told the Star.

Toronto barely missed a record on Monday when the temperature climbed to 26.9C, just short of the 27.2C mark set on Sept. 24, 1968, the newspaper reported.

Phillips says the weather pattern is being formed by a Bermuda high that's hanging over the province and the mid-western U.S., which is acting like a heat pump.

He said Toronto isn't experiencing an Indian summer, which occurs after a frost and arrives in mid- to late October after a period of harsh weather.
