A number of homes were evacuated in Scarborough Monday night as police investigated a suspicious item found in a garage.
Police discovered the item in a children’s toy box at around 7:20 p.m. as they were executing a search warrant for drugs at an address on Scarborough Golf Club Road. Police also received information that there was an explosive device in the garage, investigators said.
Officers set up a perimeter, evacuated several surrounding homes and a bomb squad was called in to check the item.
Some people were allowed back inside their homes as of 11:30 p.m. Monday. However police said it could be several hours before all residents are allowed to return home.
Police were still working to determine late Monday whether the item contained actual explosives.
