A fatal multivehicle collision temporarily shut down parts of Highway 401 in Whitby on Tuesday.
The crash happened at approximately 10:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes just east of Thickson Road.
Eastbound and westbound lanes were temporarily closed between Thickson and Stevenson Roads, as Ontario Provincial Police tended to the scene of the crash.
The eastbound lanes were reopened at about 12:30 p.m. All the westbound lanes were reopened at around 4:15 p.m., but the Thickson Road off ramp is expected to remain closed for several hours for clean up.
One male was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt told CTV Toronto's Tamara Cherry.
A representative from Ornge Air Ambulance told CTV Toronto that a man in his 20s was transferred to Sunnybrook Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
A second male, age unknown, was transferred to hospital with serious injuries, and a third male was transported to hospital with minor injuries.
Schmidt said that four vehicles were involved in the crash: a transport truck, two cars and a coach bus.
The back of one of the vehicles was completely destroyed, leaving just the frame of the car intact.
An Ornge air ambulance landed on the highway near the scene, but left without a patient onboard.
