Emergency officials were forced to rescue a base jumper at Bluffers Park on Saturday afternoon, after the jumper's stunt went awry and stranded him 60 metres above the water's surface.

The incident occurred near Bluffers Park Marina in the city's east end, leaving the man hanging off a ledge, perilously close to a potentially fatal fall.

It's believed that the man intended to glide gently above the marina, but instead, his chute became entangled and the flight abruptly ended.

Not long after, a high-angle rescue team sprang into action and scaled the cliff in order help the thrill-seeker, who hasn't been named. The rescue, which was also treacherous, was completed by around 5 p.m.

CTV Toronto's Ken Regular reported that the man involved in the incident has jumped before. It isn't known if the man will face any criminal charges.

Base jumping is known to occur in mountainous regions, but jumps have also been attempted in urban centres, as the participants leap off of tall structures like buildings and bridges in order to glide to the ground.
