Police have announced a fourth person has been charged in the beating death of a prisoner at the Don Jail in early January.

Staff at the jail found Kevon Phillips unconscious on the afternoon of Jan. 2. Paramedics transported him to hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries, but doctors couldn't save Phillips.

He became Toronto's first homicide victim of 2010 and the second inmate to be slain in a matter of months. A third inmate suffered a severe beating.

Sources told CTV News that Phillips was beaten to death in connection with a botched attempt to smuggle drugs.

Phillips had been awaiting deportation back to his native Trinidad after exhausting his appeals on a sexual assault conviction. However, travel document problems held up his return.

Police announced two arrests in late March, followed by a third arrest last week in connection with Phillips' murder.

On Friday, police said they have arrested Christoper Fearon, 26, of Toronto and charged him with second-degree murder in connection with Phillips' murder.

He is to make a court appearance on Saturday.

The Don holds short-term prisoners who are either awaiting trial or sentencing. It is scheduled to close in 2012. Its inmates will be moved to the Toronto South detention centre, which is currently being built.
