Four men are now in police custody, charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a Toronto man on Halloween.
On Oct. 31, officers were called to the area of Yonge and College streets at around 2:30 a.m. for a report of a collision. Once on the scene, police located 25-year-old Charles Shillingford behind the wheel of his vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.
The victim was taken to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
At a news conference on Monday, Insp. Greg McLane told reporters that investigators were able to conclude that the shooting had occurred on Charles Street. After being shot, Shillingford tried to leave the area in his Chrysler 300 but ended up crashing his vehicle.
The victim, McLane said, was targeted and was known to authorities.
Throughout last week, McLane said authorities issued several search warrants in connection with the case which resulted in the arrest of four suspects.
McLane said that the four suspects are allegedly associated with ‘Heart of Kings’ -- a local street gang.
Last week, police arrested suspects 31-year-old Jahmal Joseph Richardson of Oakville, 26-year-old Kyle Sparks MacKinnon of Toronto, 20-year-old Mitchell Mannette and 19-year-old Denzell Tyresse Walter Desmond both of Hamilton. They were all charged with first-degree murder in connection with the incident.
It is expected that the suspects will appear together in a College Park courtroom sometime on Thursday, May 19.
Police say MacKinnon is also a suspect in another homicide investigation.
He has been charged with two counts of second degree murder and three counts of attempted murder pertaining to a double homicide near a restaurant in Chinatown in January.
On Jan. 31, two men were killed and three others wounded following a shooting on Spadina Avenue, north of Dundas, near the New Ho King restaurant.
Police also believe there are several other individuals who have knowledge about Shillingford's death who have not yet come forward to investigators.
