The former CEO of Ontario’s troubled air ambulance service Ornge is working again as a doctor in Thunder Bay, CTV News has confirmed.
Chris Mazza, who initially stepped down from Ornge two years ago citing health reasons, was subsequently fired by the province without severance over the company’s financial irregularities.
Mazza, a doctor who specialized in emergency medicine, is now working in the emergency room of Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Centre. The hospital has hired a number of physicians on a temporary basis to help fill the gaps in the ER.
For months, Mazza’s lawyer insisted that his client was unable to testify at a legislative committee looking into questionable spending at Ornge because of his mental health.
Mazza ended up appearing before the committee in the summer of 2012.
At the request of Ontario’s health ministry, the OPP has launched a criminal investigation into Ornge.
