At least four families were forced out of their homes after a three-alarm fire early Monday morning.

The blaze erupted at a semi-detached home at 163 Elward Blvd., in the Danforth and Warden avenues area, at about 2 a.m.

"There was a small fire starting on the front porch," said neighbour Theresa Burnett. "I ran to call 911, and by the time I came back out it was fully engulfed."

Witnesses said the flames quickly spread inside and then onto the neighbouring house.

One man reportedly jumped to safety from the second-floor of one house.

Several homes in the area were evacuated, and one person was treated for smoke inhalation.

Crews put out the blaze a few hours later.

Investigators with the Ontario Fire Marshal's office are investigating.

Meanwhile, one youth was killed early Sunday morning after being trapped in a burning house in Angus, west of Barrie.

Passing teenagers managed to save two other youths caught in the blaze, Ontario Provincial Police said. The youths were taken to a Barrie hospital before being airlifted to an Ottawa hospital with unknown injuries.

Police said the house that burned down was vacant.

The age of the deceased and the other youths hasn't been released.
