WHITBY, Ont. -- Police are looking for an elderly woman they say is involved in a series of identify thefts across the Greater Toronto Area and beyond.
Durham regional police say there are at least 16 victims, all senior citizens, whose personal information was unlawfully used by the suspect.
It's alleged that between November 2011 and July this year, the suspect went to banks in several cities -- including Whitby, Toronto, Cambridge, London and Sudbury -- with counterfeit ID to take over legitimate individual bank accounts.
Police say she has also opened bank accounts using false identification and has deposited more than $125,000 in stolen, altered and counterfeit cheques in order to withdraw the funds later.
The suspect is described as white, five-feet-five, between the ages of 60 and 70, with short white hair and a hump on her back.
Police also say that during a visit to a Toronto-area bank in July, she had medical gauze affixed to her right forearm.
They say it's believed the woman could be a resident of west-end Toronto.
