Ontario's DriveTest facilities will remain closed for the start of the school year, but the two sides will head back to the bargaining table on Wednesday morning.

DriveTest is the brand name of Ontario's Driver Examination Centres, which were previously operated by the province. Since 2003, the centres have been run by Serco DES Inc., a private company based in North York.

More than 500 driving instructors walked off the job on Aug. 21, after failing to come to an agreement with Serco DES prior to a strike deadline.

Job security is one of the major issues in the dispute.

DriveTest estimates that as many as 4,000 people have missed out on obtaining their licence since the start of the strike.

But the province has extended all driver's licences that both require a test and are about to expire, for the duration of the strike.

Anybody who needs a new licence will have to wait until the strike is over to schedule their test.
