One person has died and another three are in hospital following a multivehicle collision in Etobicoke.

Six cars were involved in a crash at Highway 27 and Belfield Road at about 6:15 a.m. on Wednesday.

Traffic was stopped at a red light when an approaching Ford Escape SUV failed to slow down. The SUV slammed into the rear of a black Mazda, causing it to strike several other vehicles, CP24's Cam Woolley reported from the scene.

Four people were transported to hospital where the 44-year-old driver of the Mazda succumbed to injuries, Toronto Police Const. Clint Stibbe confirmed to CTV Toronto.

Highway 27 was closed between Rexdale Boulevard and Dixon Road, and Belfield Road is closed at Highway 27 as tow truck drivers removed the wreckage.

The closures lasted until shortly before noon, after an extensive police investigation into the cause of the crash. They are now trying to determine why the driver of the SUV failed to slow for traffic ahead.

Stibbe asked any witnesses to contact their traffic division to share what they saw.

Roads were dry at the time, but police haven't ruled out that weather may have been a factor. They are working to determine the speeds of the vehicles at the time of the crash.
