Wet roads and rainy weather may have helped lead to a fatal pedestrian accident in east-end Toronto Tuesday morning.

The 48-year-old woman had been attempting to cross Warden Avenue, between St. Clair Avenue and Danforth Road at around 6:30 a.m.

"It appears she had just gotten off the southbound bus here, and was waiting to cross from the west side to the east side.  As she did attempt to cross, she was struck in the centre lane by a southbound white cargo van ," Const. Hugh Smith of Toronto Police's traffic services unit told CTV Toronto.

She was pronounced dead, making her the 42nd traffic fatality of 2009 in Toronto. Her daughter came upon the scene.

One witness at the scene told reporters it apeared as if the woman didn't see the van coming. Police say the woman may have been wearing earbuds and listening to an audio device when the accident happened.

The woman was heading to Tradition Fine Foods, the place where she worked as a muffin packer.

"We lost our friend, we're very upset about this," said one employee. Another described her as very nice.

The driver, who was the first person to call 911, suffered stress-related chest pains and was transported to a local hospital, according to police.

Warden remained closed throughout the morning as authorities investigated the crash.
