A 43-year old woman has been charged with second-degree murder following a fatal hit-and-run in Pelmo Park on Tuesday that left her 65-year-old mother dead.

The incident happened in a parking lot at a Leon’s Furniture store on 10 Suntract Rd., near Jane Street and Black Creek Dr., just after 2 p.m.

Police said they were called to the location for a potential hit-and-run and found an older woman with obvious signs of trauma.

The victim was identified by police as 65-year-old Eleanor Campbell.

Det. Paul Worden with Toronto’s homicide unit, told CTV Toronto the victim and another woman were at a restaurant in the area Tuesday afternoon before driving to Leon’s.

The pair parked at the west end of the parking lot and, "at one point, (Campbell) did not want to be in the car and started walking away," with the assistance of her walker, Worden said.

According to police, surveillance footage shows a vehicle driving towards the woman.

After the woman was struck, the driver "very casually drove away," Worden said.

Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene.

At first, police weren’t sure if Campbell was struck intentionally but Det. Worden said once they obtained surveillance footage, they were able to come to a conclusion.

A suspect identified as Toronto resident Michelle Campbell was charged with second-degree murder on Wednesday after being arrested at a relative’s home Tuesday night.

Police are asking anyone who may have been in the parking lot Tuesday afternoon and witnessed the women together to contact investigators, even if they did not witness the collision. Detectives can be reached at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).

Campbell’s murder is Toronto’s 20th homicide of the year.
